Thunder Bay Social Science Research Grant Program

The Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay is the leading non-profit supporter of research into Alzheimer disease and related dementia.

The Society is interested in fostering new researchers, and innovative high quality research investigating individual and social issues relating to these diseases.

To this end, the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay has created a new Local Research Grant program. A grant of $1,000 will be awarded annually to a senior or graduate student, or to a "new scholar".

Studies proposed must be seen to be of benefit to those living or working in Thunder Bay or district. Awards are made for a one year period. This grant is intended to support research for a graduate thesis or major paper, a pilot research project contributing to further study, and/or travel expenses to disseminate research findings relative to dementia studies.

Proposals for research studies in a Social Science discipline will be considered. The focus for the Local Research Grant is on studies which aim to inform and thus to enhance the quality of life for those living with these diseases and/or their caregivers.

Founded in 1986, the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay offers support to people with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers; provides public education; promotes awareness in the community and funds research.

Over 3,200 people in Northwestern Ontario currently live with dementia. This number is expected to double within a generation. The Society depends on local support and donations, as the demand for support and services continues to grow.
